Despite the massive search operation, the leopard reportedly killed a woman on Tuesday sparking a panic in the area.[break]
Police said Parbati Chand, 29, was killed while collecting grass for cattle at her father´s house in Aamchaur VDC -8 and her body was recovered from the near-by forest. Chand, who lives in Dodhara VDC-5 of Kanchanpur, had been visiting her father.
Until Chand´s death, eight women and five men had lost their lives in the leopard attack. People fear to come out of the village, children are unsafe and women have stopped to collecting grass for their cattle from the forest.
A team of 45 personnel of the Armed Police Force and Nepal Army and 32 Nepal Police personnel from Kanchnapur were deployed to capture the leopard.
The security personnel had themselves spread out in separate team in the southern part of the Baitadi district. They had searched Kulau, Bilshpur, Amchaur, Mahakali, Pancheshowr, Sharmali among others looking for the leopard.
According to Police Inspector Lal Bahadur Saud, the security team returned after the leopard could not be captured.
“In the last two months alone 8 people lost their lives in leopard attack," said Saud. After leopard attacks increased, the District Security Committee had asked the help from the security forces. The joint security team was deployed in the affected area on October 9.
In the wake of increasing attack of the leopard, local administration deployed armed security personnel in the affected area. However, the leopard is yet to be spotted. Besides, two wildlife experts have also be stationed in the affected area to help track the killer leopard.
