Addressing a function organized to mark the birth anniversary of late Gajendra Narayan Singh in the capital, the prime minister allaying concerns from various quarters said the integration and rehabilitation of the Maoist combatants would be accomplished before the promulgation of the new constitution in May, 2008.
Defense Minister Bidya Bhandari in her recent remarks had ruled out the possibility of integrating the Maoists combatants in the national army.
“The government is ready to integrate the Maoist combatants in security agencies on the basis of their interests, set criterion, qualification and consensus among political parties,” Nepal said. He said that a Special Committee on Supervision, Integration and Rehabilitation of Maoist Combatants is currently working to accomplish the tasks.

Stating that the committee has already arrived at consensus on the issue related to the code of conduct and chain of command, he added, “I am fully confident that we will soon reach a conclusion on various issues including the number, criteria and working procedures (about the integration and rehabilitation of the Maoist combatants).”
