Nepali girls’ squad make it to the final of the 76th Independence Day Football Tournament in Sikkim

KATHMANDU, August 13: A team of Nepali girls have paved their way to finals of a football tournament at Sikkim, organized jointly by Gyalsingh District Administration and Yangthang Sporting Club on the occasion of 76th Anniversary of the independence of India. The tournament is being held from August 3 to August 15. 

The girls are playing from a club named Sport Wing West District and have entered into the finals of Girl's Open Side- A Football Tournament after winning two matches. They have defeated the Geyzing Club in their first match and USSCA ALO Gangtok Club in their second match. In the first match, the team won in a penalty shoot-out after a 1-1 stalemate while it had scored three goals (3-0) against Gangtok Club.

The team comprises 21 players in which Rojina Shrestha is the captain. Shrestha is also one of the members of Under-19 Women National Football team of Nepal. Anjali Machamasi, Divya Yesmali, Bishnu Maya Bal, Sukrani Tamang, Puja Magar, Semsang Goley, Namita Lama and Puja Rana Magar are among the players in the team. Machamasi and Yesmali are the members of the Under-18 National Women Football team of Nepal.

According to Anjali Machamasi, the tournament has provided a great opportunity for the players to showcase their talent. “I am very pleased to be part of this tournament. Not only have we got the opportunity to show our talent but people here have showered us with love and respect as well,” she said.

Similarly, Rojina Shrestha, captain of the team mentioned that while there are fewer football matches for women's team in Nepal, playing the tournament in foreign land holds a really great experience for her and the squad. According to her, the team is physically and mentally ready for the final match.

The final match will be held on Sunday against the Sorang Club.
