KATHMANDU, August 10: National Assembly members from the CPN-UML have demanded that the government provide immediate relief to flood and landslide victims.

UML MPs Sharda Devi Bhatta and Bimala Ghimire, speaking at the zero hour of the National Assembly meeting held on Wednesday, demanded the government focus on providing immediate relief to the flood victims.

Speaking at the meeting, MP Bhatta expressed anger that the people of Kailali and Kanchanpur were more affected by floods and landslides, but the government did not take proper steps to provide relief to them. She also alerted the government to arrange proper compensation for the people affected by the rains.

MP Bhatta said, "There are reports of a huge loss of property due to the incessant rains across the country. In all the nine districts of the Sudurpaschim Province, the people have suffered a lot of damage due to floods and landslides as a result of incessant rains. Especially the people of Kailali and Kanchanpur have been affected by this. Because of this, the daily life of the people there is becoming difficult. They have a problem with shelter. I would like to draw the attention of the government of Nepal to pay attention to the mitigation, prevention and proper management and compensation of flood victims.”

Another MP of UML, Bimala Ghimire, objected that the government is not ready to adjust the prices of petroleum products even though the Indian Oil Corporation, the sole supplier of petroleum products to Nepal, has reduced the price of petroleum products twice in recent times. She also criticized the government for not providing fertilizers to the farmers even during the cultivation, and for not providing relief to the farmers whose crops were damaged due to rains last year. MP Ghimire also accused the government of not wanting to provide relief to the people.
