A meeting of the parties held at the parliamentary party office of Nepali Congress in Singha Durbar on Sunday concluded that such an agreement not only goes against the spirit of Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA), interim constitution and various other agreements reached in the past but also undermines the constitutionally formed Special Committee for Supervision, Integration and Rehabilitation of the Maoist combatants. The parties also said the agreement between Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal and UML Chairman Jhalanath Khanal hours before the prime ministerial voting a week ago to lead future government on a rotational basis tries to establish the hegemony of the two parties.
The meeting called by NC was attended by leaders from Madhesi People´s Rights Forum-Democratic, Tarai Madhes Democratic Party, Rastriya Prajatantra Party, Sadbhawana Party, Sadbhawana Party-Anandidevi, Nepal Dalit Janajati Party and Nepal Family Party. Chure Bhawar Rastriya Party, Samajbadi Janata Party, Rastriya Prajatantra Party-Nepal, Nepal Democratic Socialist Party and independent lawmaker Sadrul Haq Miya also attended the meeting.
Talking to mediapersons after the meeting, NC parliamentary party leader Ram Chandra Paudel said they have decided to raise the issue in parliament as well. The parties decided to sit on the opposition bench.
According to a joint statement issued after the meeting, the parties also expressed concern over the failure to bring the cantoned Maoist combatants practically under the control of Special Committee. “We strongly urge the government to take strong initiatives to ensure reach of the Special Committee in temporary cantonments,” the statement said.
The parties also urged to make the ongoing discussions at Constitutional Committee more serious and meaningful and also drew the attention of all concerned to make House meeting regular and settle the differences seen in the constitution drafting at the earliest. The meeting also demanded that the peace process and new constitution should be promulgated within the stipulated time as per the understanding reached in the past.
