12th ASA Architectural Exhibition in Kathmandu

By
KATHMANDU, Dec 25: The Institute of Engineering (IOE), Pulchowk Central Campus, are hosting their 12th annual Associations of Students of Architecture (ASA) Exhibition starting today, Friday, December 25 to Sunday, December 27 at their premises in Pulchowk, Lalitpur.[break]

Hosting the event are the third-year architecture students of the five-year program.

“Each class is designated to organize a program each year, and the third year students always host the ASA Architectural Exhibition,” informs Prajwal Bajracharya, coordinator of the exhibition. Walking across the campus lawn, he continues, “Everything’s done by the students and there’s little faculty involvement.”

The three-day exhibition, which is set to open at 10 am to the public, is being held in the three-storied building of the Department of Architecture & Urban Planning.

“Besides architectural models of buildings, we’ll also be putting on display drawings, photographs, sculptures, and paintings,” says Prajwal, pointing to the bulletin board in the entrance lobby of the building. “These are freehand sketches by students and are mostly their concepts for buildings,” he says.

A winner will be chosen from the entries.

“Free-hand sketching is highly emphasized because one can’t always carry tools,” puts in Deepak Shah, a recent graduate of Pulchowk Campus and currently a freelance architect. “For instance, we need to be able to show clients our concepts without the assistance of models,” he elucidates.

On Wednesday afternoon, Deepak was working on a black, white and grey mural of the Patan Durbar Square on one of the walls inside the building. Next to his painting is a copy of Pablo Picasso’s “Three Musicians.”

In addition to thesis works of fifth-year students, models of buildings—both of well-known structures from around the world, and students’ original designs—are on display on the first level.

“For most part in the first year, we spend time learning to create models,” says Prajwal, standing amidst intricately crafted skyscraper miniatures made by first years. Most of the works on display were created on the basis of class assignments—in collaboration with other students as well individually.

Doctoral presentations of the faculty will also be on display at the exhibition which includes topics such as thermal properties of structures to earthquake measures. Currently, a total of 240 students are enrolled in the Bachelors of Architecture program at Pulchowk Campus, which is divided into ten semesters over five years. The curriculum encompasses subjects from Traditional Nepali Architecture to Asian and Modern Architecture.
