KALIKOT, Nov 10: An acute shortage of drinking water has badly affected the livelihoods of the people living in Larfa village of Palanta Rural Municipality-2 of Kalikot.

Amani Bishwakarma, a local resident, said that despite the fact that there is always a shortage of drinking water in the village during the winter season, the problem has never been resolved.

“The lack of drinking water has been a problem in our village for a long time,” he said. As there is only one tap for drinking water in the village, people have to stand in a queue and wait for their turn since morning to fetch water. “Sometimes, the locals fight over water when someone jumps the queue while waiting for their turn to fetch water,” Bishwakarma said.

A local resident, Jitan BK said that the local government did not focus on the problem of drinking water in the village. “We would not have needed anything if there was drinking water in the village," he said. “Our whole day is wasted by staying in a queue to fetch water.”

However, Ward Chairperson Biri BK said that HuRENDEC Nepal, a non-governmental organization as well as rural municipality, is currently working for drinking water in Larfa village. “Drinking water pipes will be connected to the village within a month, '' he said.

According to Ward Chairperson BK, the problem of drinking water in the village will be resolved soon as final preparations are underway for the ‘one house, one drinking water tap’ project. He said, "The local government has been working to resolve the problem and it will be resolved soon.”
