KATHMANDU, August 1: In an alarming case, all beds at the Intensive Care Units (ICUs), High Dependency Units (HDUs), emergencies and wards of the hospitals in Kathmandu are once again full with COVID-19 patients once again.

Earlier, the government had decided to lift the prohibitory orders and other restrictions enforced after witnessing a sharp decline in the number of new cases of COVID-19. However, the number of new cases being hospitalized in recent days has been on the rise. Experts fear it could be the beginning of the third wave of COVID-19 in the country.

According to Dr Sher Bahadur Pun, a virologist at Sukraraj Tropical and Infectious Disease Hospital at Teku, all ICU beds, HDU beds, Emergency units, ventilators and wards have been completely occupied with COVID-19 patients. “There is now no space for new COVID-19 patients at the hospital who need to be hospitalized,” Dr Pun added.

Most of the people who are being hospitalized are among those who have not contracted COVID-19 before and have not received any shots of COVID-19 vaccine, according to Dr Pun.

Likewise, the situation is the same at the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH) in the district. “We share a similar fate with Teku Hospital here at TUTH,” said Dr Sabin Thapaliya, “Around 135 COVID-19 patients are currently undergoing treatment at TUTH and the number is increasing everyday.” 

The situation is similar in Chitwan as well. The number of patients coming with the coronavirus infection has increased at Bharatpur Hospital, Chitwan Medical College and College of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital (Old Medical College).

The country has been recording more than 3,000 new cases of COVID-19 across the country in the past few weeks.
