KATHMANDU, May 23: President Bidya Devi Bhandari has issued an ordinance which amends the existing act on citizenship in Nepal.
A press statement issued by the Office of the President on Sunday states that the ‘Ordinance on Nepal Citizenship (First Amendment)’ has been issued at the recommendation of the Council of Ministers as per Article 114 of the Constitution of Nepal.
The ordinance was reportedly issued to address the demands raised by the Madhesh-based Janata Samajbadi Party (JSP). A faction of the party, close to leaders duo Mahantha Thakur and Rajendra Mahato, is likely to join the Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli-led Cabinet, according to sources.
It is yet to be disclosed what amendments related to acquiring Nepali citizenship have been made in the ordinance.
