JUMLA, Sept 15: The only primary health center in Jumla has remained without a doctor for the past 11 years. Eleven years ago, the doctor went on a leave and never turned up. In the absence of the MBBS doc, the Kalikakheti Primary Health Center has been manned by an Assistant Health Worker (AHW).

More than a decade and the officials at the district hospital have long forgotten who was that doc they last posted here. Nor do they know where he has ended up. The posts of staff nurse and AHW have long remained vacant, while the laboratory is dysfunctional in the absence of a lab technician. [break]

“We are facing serious obstacles in treating the patients in the absence of health officials,” AHW Balaram Nepali lamented.

A newborn baby died a few days ago in the health post immediately after the delivery. Bhaduri Buda, a local woman, complaint of labor pain and was rushed to the health post. “It took almost three days on foot to reach the health post but was of no use,” Buda´s younger sister Sun Keshari Rokaya lamented.

The local residents of Kalikakheti village have started visiting a private clinic than visit this resource-crunch health post, which is of no use. They prefer to walk for around three hours to this private clinic than visit this health center.

The government had declared free health services in sub health posts, health posts, primary health centers and district hospitals three years ago. However, the people of Jumla have not been able to avail the facility.

There is one district hospital, one primary healthcare center, eight health posts and 20 sub-health posts in Jumla but most of the posts of the health officials are lying vacant.

The government has built a new building recently at the cost of Rs 17.1 million, but the locals bemoan that despite such a massive investment on infrastructure, it´s of hardly any use if the government didn´t appoint health officials and retain them.

The health center has a lofty plan to expand the hospital to a 15-bed facility, but the locals are highly skeptical about receiving even the basic treatment here.
