The government had decided to hire a maximum of 45,000 temporary police personnel for poll security. According to DIG Nawa Raj Silwal, spokesperson of Nepal Police, the regional offices have collected the applications and the selection process has begun under the provisions suggested by the Election Security Plan. Among the total applicants, 19,642 are female and a significant number of former security personnel, college students and youths have applied for the job that will last for two months.
Among the five development regions, the majority of applicants for the temporary police, totaling 48,718, are from Central Development Region, with about 8,038 from Kathmandu district alone. Eastern Development Region received 42,862 applications, Western Development Region received 27,539 applications, Mid-Western Development Region received 26,840 applications and Far-Western Development Region received 15,339 applications.
"The selection of competent applicants will be carried out from Thursday and the names of shortlisted candidates will be made public on October 10," a police official said. According Nepal Police, the written test will be held on October 3 in respective districts.
Selection of candidates would be made at the regional level and high priority would be accorded to retired personnel from Nepal Army, Nepal Police and Armed Police Force (APF). A selection committee, headed by regional administrator with Chief District Officers as members, would finalize the candidates.
The aspirants would be screened for their political affiliations and criminal background. We are serious about Election Commission´s concern that cadres of political should not be hired as temporary police, DIG Silwal said.
The temporary police personnel will be hired for two months and will be provided with uniform, salary and ration on par with police constables. Temporary security personnel to be recruited under Nepal Police will be mobilized to carry out subsidiary roles such as assisting police personnel deputed for booth security.
