Youth shun abortion

KATHMANDU, July 2: Abortion has always been a very sensitive and highly debated topic in the society. Abortion, a lot of times, has been criticized for its ethical and moral issues whereas it has been justified in the case of unwanted pregnancy and cases of rape.

The debate is still going strong and many anti-abortion protests have also been taking place in many developed countries.[break]

Even in Nepal, abortion has a very deep rooted history because of rampant female feticide in rural as well as urban parts of the country. Although female feticide has decreased, abortion, because of unwanted pregnancy, seems to have risen amongst the urban youth of Nepal. In general, many young people seem to think very negatively about abortion.

“We know that most of couples decide to abort the child once they come to know that it’s a girl and because they want a son to continue their family lineage forward,” says Sakin Maharjan, 16, a student of +2 Sciences at Little Angels’ College.

“Abortion is more of discrimination between girls and boys and it makes me sad to say that even most educated people perform abortions. I want to tell these people that if they really don´t want children. then abstinence or protection is the way to go,” he adds.

People also seem to be uninformed about the various contraceptive devices available in the market. Supporting this, Angila Sharma Nepali says on our Facebook page: “A straight No to abortion because there are a lot of tools to prevent pregnancy, so why go for abortion? It also affects the health of the mother, and from a women´s perspective, as soon as a woman knows she is pregnant, she already develops unconditional love for her child. So abortion should definitely be discouraged!”

“When you already have products like i-pill and condoms, I think it’s a very cruel if people get pregnant and choose to go for abortion. In case of uneducated people, I want to ask them is if they don’t know about all these contraceptive devices, how come they know about abortion?” asks Chandni Kayastha on our Facebook page.

Although there seems to be many abortions taking place in Nepal, its youth seem strongly against the idea and seem to be more aware of contraceptives and are more willing to use them. They seem to take abortion as a very conventional idea that needs to be done away with.
