KATHMANDU, July 12: Films are more than just entertainment; they have the power to subconsciously influence our lives as well as our behaviors.

Some might argue that watching movies is a passive activity, a relaxing escape from reality. But if we were to go outside our physical selves and look to our emotions, movies have the unspoken power to move us in ways that the physical cannot do. [break]

A good movie makes us react; with an effective play of footage and narration, a movie can convey a strong and lasting message to its audience.

Thanks to the Internet and video streaming sites such as Youtube, anyone can write, act in, and direct their own independent films.

Moviemaking has never been this accessible till now, allowing more and more amateur filmmakers to quickly emerge on the scene.

Filmmaking competitions are taking notice of these recent phenomena as well, creating more amateur filmmaking competitions.

The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) is no exception.

Celebrating its 50th anniversary, WWF has announced a film competition by calling all interested filmmakers to produce an original film effectively incorporating WWF’s chosen reflective theme, “Life. Nature. You. Make the Connection.”

The participants are expected to produce a film up to a maximum of two minutes, including subtitles if the film is not in English.

There will be two winning entries. A chosen jury will select one winning entry on the basis of content, production value and creativity.

The popular choice winner will be selected through a jury voting.

Each winner will receive a commission from WWF to create a short film with a minimum budget of US$10,000. Winners will also visit India to attend the CMS Vatavaran environmental film festival, and the entire expenses for the trip will be paid for by WWF.

To submit the short film, participants have to complete the registration form and upload their film to the competition group on Vimeo, www.vimeo.com.

The competition is open to all interested amateur and professional filmmakers.

The deadline for submission is October 9, 2011.
