Weather stalls effort to airlift skeletons from Langtang

RASUWA, Aug 10: Seventeen human skeletons recovered from Langtang could not be brought to Kathmandu for forensic examination as helicopters in which they were to be flown in remained grounded due to adverse weather conditions.

The skeletons were supposed to be brought to the government-run Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital in Maharajgunj in the capital city to establish their identity.Over one hundred people, including foreign tourists, went missing in avalanches in Langtang area that were set off by tremors following the mega earthquake of April 25.

"Helicopters could not be sent on Saturday morning due to bad weather conditions. The skeletons were supposed to be sent to the Teaching Hospital in Kathmandu for further investigations." said Chief District Officer, Shiva Ram Gelal. District Administration Office (DAO), Rasuwa informed that unstable weather has prevented the helicopters from taking off.

Around 106 Nepalese and foreigners went missing in the Langtang avalanches.

Despite continuous efforts to find the missing since the disaster struck, only the skeletons of 17 people have been found so far.

The authorities have kept the skeletons safely at Langtang National Park for the time being.
