“The environment for our party joining the government has turned positive from Tuesday after the one-on-one talks between our chairman and the prime minister. The prime minister has reiterated his commitment to the implementation of the seven-point agreement,” said Baidya at a talks program in Kathmandu. [break]
He revealed that the UML has pledged to leave the position of deputy prime minister and finance minister, in lieu of home minister, to the Maoists party.
“Assessing the current situation, we are likely to join the government,” he said, adding that the Maoists would continue their support to Khanal even if they don´t join the government.
The Maoist vice-chairman said the party standing committee meeting on Wednesday morning deliberated on the issues, but he did not divulge the details. “We will take a concrete decision on Thursday,” said Baidya, who leads the resurgent hard-line camp in the Maoist party.
He also urged other political parties to participate in the government after his party does so. “Once we join the government, other political parties should seriously think about joining the government,” he said.
