Top UML leaders made the appeal at a press meet organized at the party head office in Balkhu on Monday two days after former UML politburo member Ram Chandra Jha and former UML lawmaker Lucky Sherpa defected to UCPN (Maoist).[break]
CPN-UML had recently formed a taskforce headed by party general secretary Ishwar Pokharel with a mandate to negotiate with a group of leaders, who had quit the party in the past. The three-member team also held talks with some political parties that share similar political view as UML.
"We are going to present a surprise package within couple of weeks as the talks with individual leaders and political parties are in the final stages," said Pokharel. Two party secretaries Shankar Pokharel and Yubaraj Gyawali are members of the negotiations team.
Leaders said the team is holding talks with some former UML leaders who had joined UCPN (Maoist) such as Radha Krishna Mainali and JB Tuhure. Similarly, the party is for welcoming some other leaders who have remained inactive in the recent times.
A large group of leaders mainly from ethnic and indigenous communities led by the party´s erstwhile Vice-chairman Ashok Rai quit the party and formed Federal Socialist Party last year.
The party´s move to welcome inactive senior leaders and propose for unification process with some small political parties comes in a bid to consolidate its position in the coming elections.
