KATHMANDU, Dec. 22: The Unified CPN (Maoist) has decided to restrain maximum flexibility to give outlet tot he current political stalemate.

An extended meeting of the party being held at Royal Singhi Hotel in the Capital since Friday took the decision to make optimum efforts for building national consensus and stand firm against the opposition parties´ bid to rein in the government. [break]

A conspiracy is being hatched to sideline the political parties by presenting non-political people and group so that the parties should team up against such maneuvering, said the UCPN (Moist) sources.

After the meeting, UCPN (Maoist) Chairperson Pushpa Kamal Dahal said that there is no dispute in the party to move ahead by forging consensus among the political parties.

The party has taken the decisions taking into account the national need to hold fresh election to the Constituent Assembly (CA) by coming April-May by bringing people to the confidence, he added.

Likewise, UCPN (Maoist) leader and Finance Minister Barsha Man Pun said the decision was made to go ahead by embracing the national need.

The meeting decided to accept the leadership of any political party in the national unity government if the parties came closer to make package deal in such a way that would institutionalize agenda of change, leader Pun further said.

The party also made a decision to adopt any measure to form national consensus government, he added.

He also claimed that the party ahs developed a common perspective to deal with the overall political process and that the disagreement emerged due to misunderstanding has converted to consensus.

The meeting also drew a conclusion that there would be no compromise on the issues pertaining to the framing of new constitution with federalism, federalism with identity and drafting a new constitution through the CA and the opposition should also be ready for this.

The meeting concluded that the government alliance and opposition parties should work with unity instead of blaming the Unified CPN (Maoist) alone to be responsible, and it also discussed that the Nepali Congress, the CPN (UML) and other major political parties to take share of the current political transition.

UCPN (Maoist) leader Pun said his party would be ready to give leadership to NC President Sushil Koirala if the political parties agree to forge consensus on the agenda of change. But the topic of whether or not to reach agreement on this agenda has become the central question now, he added.

Similarly, UCPN (Maoist) leader and political advisor to the prime minister, Devendra Poudel, quoting the views expressed by the leaders in the meeting, said that a unanimous decision has been made to take initiative by the party for forging national consensus.

He said decision has been taken to pursue dialogue and discussions among the political parties from tomorrow onwards and to give the responsibility of seeking consensus among the political parties to the party central office.

The UCPN (Maoist) central office comprises party chairman Dahal, vice-chairman and Prime Minister Dr. Bhattarai, vice-chairman and Deputy Prime Minister Narayan Kaji Shrestha and party secretary Posta Bhaadur Bogati.

"Since whether or not we are going to agree on the agenda is the major issue rather than who becomes the prime minister, we emphasized that we should first seek consensus on the agenda, and if agreement is reached on the agenda, then the prime minister is not an obstacle but a facilitator. The party´s meeting has established this," Poudel said.

When journalists asked what they were going to do now that the deadline given by the President to the political parties for the formation of the national consensus government has expired, leader Poudel said there is no alternative to the President extending the deadline.

"It is the responsibility of the political parties alone to resolve the entire problems, it is not necessary for others to show concern. The UCPN (Maoist) has proved that parties are capable of resolving the problems," he added.

At the meeting, party chairman Dahal had put forth his views on the entire political process while the prime minister made a briefing of the processes undertaken by the government.

Chairman Dahal had said that conspiracies were being hatched to hijack the entire political process from the hands of the political parties and the parties needed to seek the formula of consensus to thwart this conspiracy.
