KATHMANDU, July 4: Two national swimming associations, one recognized by National Sports Council (NSC) and the other by Nepal Olympic Committee (NOC), officially merged on Monday after the mediation of NSC Member Secretary Yuvaraj Lama.

After the merger, Ashok Bajracharya, the erstwhile general secretary of Nepal Swimming Association (NSA) backed by NOC, will lead the new committee as the new president and Jagat Man Shrestha, the general secretary of NSA backed by NSC will retain the same portfolio.[break]

Amar Singh Shah, Rajesh Bajracharya, Birendra Lal Shrestha and Nem Bahadur Shrestha are vice presidents in the newly formed 20-member committee. Iswar Karki is the secretary of the new NSA while Rabi Singh takes the charge of a treasurer.

Suresh Man Shrestha, Naresh Baidya, Tajir Uddin Muslim, Bipin Timila, Basudev Niraula, Ranjan Bhattarai, Rajendra Shrestha, Raj Man Tuladhar, Yuvaraj Sunuwar, Ratna Maharjan, Manoj Dawadi and Olympian Nayana Shakya are members of the newly formed NSA body.

Samim Miya Ansari, the president of NSA backed by NSC, and Geeta Rana, vice president of NSA backed by NOC, have been excluded from the executive committee in the course of merger. Both Ansari and Rana were not present at the program announcing the merger.

“Some friends are not in the newly formed committee as we had to adjust both sides and make the executive committee smaller one,” said NSC Member Secretary Lama.

NSC had formed a taskforce comprising of Rana, Bajracharya and Singh from the NSA recognized by NOC as well as Ansari, Jagat Man Shrestha and Bhattarai from the NSA recognized by NSC, to decide the framework of merger last week.

The newly formed NSA body claimed of getting affiliation of international governing body of swimming FINA.

President Bajracharya and General Secretary Shrestha of the newly formed NSA body attributed the role of NSC Member Secretary Lama behind the successful merger.

Lama said that the newly formed NSA board is also an ad hoc body and it should conduct election within two months.

Lama also vowed to end the disputes about Nepal Kabaddi Association and Nepal Gymnastic Association as soon as possible. “We should solve problems within the sports sector by ourselves instead of knocking the doors of political powers,” said Lama.
