KATHMANDU, June 11: Joint General Secretary of the Mahanta Thakur-led Tarai Madhesi Democratic Party (TMDP) Ratneshwor Lal Goit on Tuesday joined the CPN-UML.

CPN-UML Chairman Jhalanath Khanal welcomed him to the party by putting tika on his forehead amidst a special function held at the UML headquarters in Balkhu.

At the same function, Khanal also welcomed former vice-president of District Development Committee, Sindhuli, Hem Bahadur Lama, UCPN (Maoist) Tharuwan State Committee member Rom Harsha Dhital, New State Convention Organizing Committee member Bhagwan Prasad Dahal and former Maoist combatant Amar Giri to the party. Along with Goit, TMDP Dhanusha district committee members Jaya Prakash Yadav, Ram Padartha Salauta, Rajendra Mandal, Satya Narayan Mandal, Indal Yadav also joined UML. A former central committee member of UML, Goit had joined TMDP after being defeated in the CA election from constituency number 2 of Dhanusha district.

“There was rivalry between Goit and Ram Chandra Jha in the district,” said a UML leader from Dhanusha. “He has returned to UML thinking it will now be easy to work as Jha has already quit the party and joined the UCPN (Maoist).”

Likewise, Lama, who was elected vice-president of Sindhuli District Development Committee as a UML candidate in 1998 had joined Narayan Singh Pun-led Samata Party. He was an independent leader since the Samata Party was dissolved after the death of Pun. Likewise, Dhital, who was a UML cadre, before joining the UCPN (Maoist), decided to return to his previous party.

All those joining the UML on Tuesday have demanded that they be given important responsibility in the party organization. Goit stating that the leadership of Madhes-based parties has frustrated him said he is ready to accept any kind of responsibility the UML leadership offers him.

While welcoming the new leaders in the party, Chairman Khanal said the decision of important leaders from other parties to join the UML would help the party in the upcoming election. “This will greatly help the party as the country is moving towards the election,” he said. “The trend of cadres from other parties joining the UML is growing as we have adopted a clear policy on a number of issues.”

UML also claimed that altogether 36,342 cadres belonging to various other parties have joined the UML recently. Most of them were from the UCPN (Maoist), claimed the party.
