KATHMANDU, Nov 26: The Ministry of Industry has formed a task force to study the current status of 10 mines across the country, which have been identified as storing natural petrol, said the ministry.

Minister for Industry Som Prasad Pandey said that the government is working to find out the quantity of gasoline and its status in such mines and the possibility of extracting it. Briefing a parliamentary committee for Industry, Commerce and Consumer Rights on Wednesday, Minister Pandey said that the task force has been instructed to submit a report within six months.

The government had studied the possibility of extracting petroleum and natural gas from various places of the country 26 years ago with the assistance of JICA.

"There are 10 blocks between Dhangadi and Morang districts identified as possible mines for extracting petroleum and two possible places to extract petroleum gas -- one in Dailekh and another in Muktinath" said Minister Pandey.

The government had annulled license of various companies holding authority to study the possibility of extracting petroleum from these places after they did nothing for a decade.

According to the minister, 72 clusters have been identified in Kathmandu valley having storage of natural cooking gas spreading up to 26 square kilometers.
