It’s something people, especially girls, experience almost on a daily basis. Given its frequency, should ignoring the eve teasers be the answer, or is there an alternative? How far is too far in cases of eve teasing?[break]
“To be honest, I used to be one of those eve teasers. It was fun when I was with my group of friends. It’s been a long time since I’ve stopped doing it. I think immature people with lots of free time on their hands are basically the ones who are seen eve-teasing. However, it’s a kind of phase for them too till they find the right path for themselves. It’s best to take it easy and ignore it unless things go beyond a limit,” shares Loojaw Manandhar, 25, a 3D Animator at Incessant Rain.
However, putting a positive spin to eve teasing, Sanjay Gelal opines, “Teasing is strongly interrelated with one’s psychology, and as per the biological difference between a male and a female, that aspect appears. I don’t think there’s any harm in teasing as long as it doesn’t affect social codes and doesn’t lead to sexual harassment. Playful teasing and healthy flirting lessens pain and tiredness. So it’s also a method of relaxation. Sometimes, it can help a girl feel admired and pretty, and boost her confidence too. As long the teasing is healthy without any cause for harassment, it’s beneficial to both parties.”
Does a girl really ‘feel pretty’ and does she truly need that ‘boost of confidence’ from such a source?
Giving it a girl’s perspective, Preeti Karna, 21, a student of Biomedical Engineering, College of Biomedical Engineering and Applied Sciences, says, “I get really angry when I have to endure this. However, instead of ignoring it I start to fight back. I believe that if you ignore, it harms you more. I suggest you roughen that person up, but only in the safety of a group of friends.”
Praveen Bhusal says, “Most people don’t like eve teasing. It’s quite an embarrassment for a female to be teased. And boys wouldn’t like it if a female walking with them is eve-teased.”
It’s true. No one really likes to be a victim of eve teasing or likes it when someone near us is teased. But apart from letting them have a piece of our minds, the best thing appears to wait for them to grow up.
