SPORTS BRIEFS: Twin victories for Police

KATHMANDU, Dec 2: Defending champion Nepal Police Club achieved twin victories on Sunday to maintain its cent percent record in the Eighth Dhorpatan Women´s Double League Volleyball Tournament. With the victories Police with 15 points went three points clear of the second placed Armed Police Force.



In the match held at New Bus Park, Gongabu, Police registered straight set wins during both matches to achieve fifth victory in a row. Police defeated Angel´s Heart 25-12, 25-9, 25-7 and edged past New Diamond Sports Club 25-16, 25-23, 25-16. [break]



The other departmental team APF thumped Kavre District Volleyball Association 25-3, 25-11, 25-9 to maintain its winning streak. APF has 12 points with a match advantage over arch rival Police.



Chandeshwari Youth Club of Ramechhap overcame Dhulabari Higher Secondary School of Jhapa 25-12, 25-13, 25-10 and Angel´s Heart beat Dhading District Volleyball Association 25-4, 25-7, 25-8.



National, Trinity advance



KATHMANDU
: Defending champion National Campus and Trinity made it to the pre-quarterfinal of boy´s section on Sunday in the 10th Prime Cup Inter-college Basketball Tournament being held in the capital. Riding on 15 points of Prajun Pokharel National edged past Whitefield College 59-22 to top group A. Trinity blanked Cambridge 60-6 to emerge winner of group E. Krishna Maharjan contributed 15 points for Trinity. In other matches of boy´s section LRI beat Gurukul 38-32, Premier struggled past Rosebud 47-45, NASA downed Ace 52-28 and Oriental beat Bernhardt 40-33. In the girl´s round robin league NASA thrashed Bernhardt 50-10 to make a winning start. Monalisa Shrestha contributed 19 points for the winning side.



Host Army school, Galaxy tied



KATHMANDU
: Host Sainik Awasiya Mahavidyalaya and Galaxy Public shared points on Sunday after tie during the Sixth Chief of Army Staff Inter-school Running Cricket Tournament being held at the host´s ground in Bhaktapur. Both the team got one point each after the result and has three points each in group A after two matches. EPS and Deep Jyoti are yet to open score in the points table. In other match, Nepal Police School defeated Brihaspati Vidyyasadan by four wickets. With its first victory, Police scored equal two poitns as that of Rajan Memorial and Brihaspati in group B. Opting to bat first Galaxy scored 100/9 in the allotted 20 over.



Dhirendra Raut (33) and Nabin Budathoki (25) contributed for Galaxy. Dharmendra Rana Magar of Army, who was declared the man-of-the-match, claimed three wickets. In its run chase, Army also scored 100 runs for the loss of nine wickets. Gunjan Yadav (30) and Dharmendra Rana Magar (12) contributed for Army. In other match reduced by two overs, Brihaspati scored 105 for the loss of eight wickets. Pratick Rajbhandari scored 34 runs for Birhastapi. Bhupendra Oli of Police scored 22 runs and claimed two wickets as Police achieved the target in the last ball. Bhupendra Oli was declared the man-of-the-match.



American team to play friendly match against MMC



KATHMANDU
: Ambassador´s Football Club of America will play a friendly football match against Nepal´s premier division team Laxmi Hyundai Manang Marshyangdi at the Dasharath Stadium on Saturday. All Nepal Football Association (ANFA) declared this amidst a press conference on Sunday.



The visiting team will, established 25 years ago, comprise number of players from Major League Soccer (MLS), according to Dhirendra Pradhan, the general secretary of ANFA. MLS is the premier division league of America.



The team is visiting Nepal under special initiation of Shyam Awale. According to Awale the visitors cancelled its tour of Myanmar and Singapore for friendly in Nepal.



Other than MLS players, the team will comprise of J-League players and other players from Bolivia, Sierra Leon, Ukraine, Scotland and South Africa who featured in their respective national teams. Among other Musa Otieno Ongao, the former Kenyan international who played 13 years for the national team will be center of attraction.



According to ANFA President Ganesh Thapa MMC was chosen to play against visiting side due to recent success achieved by the team. MMC had won the Ncell Cup and Safal Pokhara Cup few months earlier.



Rajbanshi elected in ASPU



KATHMANDU
: Nepal Sports Journalist Forum (NSJF) President Niranjan Rajbanshi was unanimously elected the executive member of Asian Sports Press Union (ASPU) during the 16th congress held in Kuwait on Saturday and Sunday. ASPU is the umbrella organization of Asian sports journalist. Rajbanshi, the president of NSJF since last nine years, was elected unanimously after five among 13 candidates withdrew their candidacy during the general assembly for eight members. Kuwait´s Faisal Al Kanai was unanimously elected to lead the 16 member committee after Ogon Batar Sato withdrew his candidacy. Faisal Al Kanai was the senior vice president in the previous committee.
