Police start with twin victories

POKHARA, Dec 20: National champion Nepal Police Club registered double victories during the First Wai Wai International Invitational Women´s Volleyball Tournament that kicked off on Tuesday in Pokhara.



In the opening match, Police saw off Workers Martyrs Memorial Club (WMMC) in straight sets 25-15, 25-5, 25-22 and in another match the departmental giant overcame Fishtail Higher Secondary School 26-24, 25-14, 25-17. [break]



In another match, Armed Police Force (APF) edged past Balodaya Higher Secondary School of Pokhara in straight sets 25-19, 26-24, 25-20. Tops Higher Secondary School of Pokhara defeated Workers Martyrs Memorial Club 25-10, 25-19, 25-23 to inflict the latter second consecutive defeat.



The tournament organized by Western Regional Volleyball Association features nine teams in total including 2 teams from abroad including Eastern Railway of Kokata, India and Young Sports Club of Funcholing, Bhutan.



This is the first occasion that a volleyball tournament will be conducted on rubber mat outside the capital.



The top four teams will bag a purse of Rs 111,000, Rs 50,555, Rs 20,222 and Rs 10,111 respectively. Likewise, best player, spiker, shooter, blocker, quicker and defense will also be awarded.



The expected cost of the event is Rs 1.3 million.



Foreign player in Fishtail



Fishtail Higher Secondary School, one of the renowned names in Nepali volleyball has included a foreign player for the first time in its team. Fishtail has included Adelle, 18, who hails from America.



According to Adelle, she was associated with Texas Tornados Club in America. Adelle had arrived in Pokhara some four months ago as a volunteer teacher in an education consultancy.



Adelle who had not trained since the last four months was included three days ago in the team.



"I had not trained since long time but I feel lucky to get the opportunity to play in Pokhara," Adelle said, adding, "Though I picked back injury while playing in America I will try to give my best in the tournament."



Adelle also vowed to play volleyball in Pokhara during her remaining five-month stay in Pokhara.



According to Fishtail coach Balaram Chhetri, Adelle came into contact with the team only on the last day of players´ registration. "We registered her with the team after we came to know that she is a good volleyball player."



According to Chhetri, Adelle will also play from Fishtail during the Dhorpatan Cup to begin after the completion of Pokhara volleyball. "She will be our team member until her stay in Pokhara," Chhetri said.
