Britta Steffen of Germany holds the world record of women´s 100m freestyle with a timing of 52.07 seconds set during 2009 in Rome.
Tamrakar competes in UCI World Cup
KATHMANDU: Nepal´s women´s national mountain bike champion Nirjala Tamrakar has claimed to be the first Nepali cyclist to compete in the UCI World Cup Finals in Val D´lasere, France. According to an e-mail sent by Tamrakar, she stood in the 52nd position during the event held on Saturday. She has said that she has achieved her biggest dream of competing in the World Cup race and creating a history in Nepali cycling being the first ever athlete to compete in the event.
Shree Baks, Belbari in semifinal
TAPLEJUNG: Shree Baks Company of Taplejung and Belbari, Morgan, advanced into the semifinal of Kanchanjungha Challenge Running Shield Football Tournament on Tuesday being held in Taplejung. Shree Baks thrashed host Kanchanjungha Fungling Club 8-0 as Nawayug Shrestha netted four goals for the winning side. Bimal Tamang achieved target twice while Narendra Niraula and Bajiman Rai netted one apiece. Similarly, Morang registered a 5-4 tiebreaker win over Sangarsha Sporting Club following a goalless stalemate in the regulation and added time. Under Women´s section, Phumbu set up title a clash against Jhapa defeating Sawadin 6-0 in the semifinal. Anu Basnet completed hat trick for the winning team while Pabitra Rai got two goals and Nisa Maden netted one.
Int´l chess in Dolkha
KATHMANDU: Dolkha District Chess Association is organizing International Rating Chess Tournament at Charikot, Dolkha from August 13 to 18 at Charikot, Dolkha. The tournament with a total cash prize of Rs 131,500 will feature matches until 10 rounds in the Swill League format. The winner will be given cash prize of Rs 25,000 along with trophy. The organizers have expected participation of 100 players in total.
Lama takes sole lead
KATHMANDU: Himal Lama of Annapuna HS School has taken sole lead after the end of the seventh round in the Puspa Lal Shrestha Memorial Inter-college Chess Tournament on Tuesday. Undefeated Lama has seven points as he defeated Sajin Maharjan of Patan Campus, Shyam Babu Shah of Mahendra Ratna Campus and Govinda Prasad Poudel of Central Campus in the fifth, sixth and seventh rounds respectively. Bibek Lama of Times College and Suroj Karmacharya of Advance Engineering are in the second place with six points each. Shah, Maharjan, Kundan Mishra of Nepal Law Campus, Susan Munikar of Kantipur Engineering College and Rupesh Sivakoti of Jana Maitri Campus are in the third position with 5.5 points each. Altogether 95 players from 46 colleges are participating in the tournament.
GoldenGate National into finals
KATHMANDU: GoldenGate International College A and National Campus on Tuesday advanced into the final of the First Bir Ganesh Man Memorial Basketball Tournament. In the first semifinal held at National Sports Council covered hall, GoldenGate edged past Bagmati Modern College 46-40. Golden Gate lost first quarter 8-9 and scored 8-8 in the second quarter. GoldenGate bounced back in the third and fourth quarter with 10-8 and 20-16 score and fixed the final spot. Anil Pandey scored 21 points for the winning team. In another semifinal, National thrashed Xavier International 63-28. National took first, second and fourth quarters with the score of 18-3, 17-2 and 12-5 while Xavier took third quarter with 18-16. Saswoti Singh scored 13 points for the winning side.
