SPORTS BRIEFS: Prime lift basketball title

KATHMANDU, Dec 9: Prime Sports Club lifted the title of the First Motidevi Cup Women´s Open National Basketball Tournament on Thursday.



Prime defeated Nakhipot Youth Club 44-17 in the final match held at the covered hall of the Dasharath Stadium. [break]



Deepika Upreti scored 16 points for secure an easy win for Prime. Prime took an early lead of 11-4 in the first quarter and kept the opponent under pressure throughout the match. The score of the second quarter was 11-5.



Prime outplayed Nakhipot in the third quarter to score 12-2. Nakhipot performed relatively well in the last quarter but it was too little and too late as they lost 10-6. The winners bagged a purse of Rs 50,000 while the runners-up received Rs 30,000. Gyanu Gauchan of Prime was adjudged the most valuable player of the tournament, which was organized by Nepal Sports Federation and Nepal Basketball Association. Gauchan also bagged Rs 20,000.



Altogether eight teams had participated in the ten-day long tournament.


Lalitpur win title



Lalitpur won the title of the Wai Wai U-19 Regional Selection Cricket Tournament of Region No 3, Kathmandu on Thursday. Lalitpur defeated Nuwakot by 88 runs at the TU Cricket Ground to top the tournament participated by four districts. Lalitpur won all the three matches played in the tournament. Lalitpur put up 129/6 in 21 overs and bowled out Nuwakot for 44 runs.



Meanwhile, Kathmandu defeated Bhaktapur by 84 runs to finish second in the points table. Kathmandu put up 173/2 in 22 overs and restricted Bhaktapur to 88/8.


Gyanodaya in semis



The hosts Gyanodaya advanced into the semifinals of the boys´ football during the 17th Eicher Gyan Carnival on Thursday. Gyanodaya defeated Gyan Kunj 2-1 at their home ground in Bungmati to meet Siddhartha Vanasthali in the semifinal. In the junior boys´ volleyball, Deep Jyoti, Gyanodaya, Ambrosia Ideal and SEBS won their respective matches. In the boys´ basketball, Elite Co-Ed defeated Motherland 30-26. In the girls´ basketball, the hosts Gyanodaya ousted GEMS 29-22.


Gothatar, Kotdev in final



Gothatar and defending champions Kotdevi advanced into the final of the Fifth FECA Cup Inter-school Boys´ Football Tournament winning their respective matches on Thursday. Ganesh Dahal scored the decider as Gothatar defeated Pritima 1-0 in the semifinal. Dilip Karki of Gothatar was adjudged man of the match. In another match, a brace from Sandeep Karki helped Kotdevi defeat Cosmic 3-2. Khil KC scored one for the winning team while Rudra Khadka and Nabin Subba scored one each for Cosmic. Karki was declared man of the match.



Machhapuchhre, Daffodil win



Machhapuchhre and Daffodil School registered victories on Thursday in the ongoing 15th Father Moran Memorial Primary School-level Invitational Football Tournament being held at the Saint Xavier´s School, Godavari. A brace from Pabil Magar helped Machhapuchhre defeat Modern Indian School 2-0. Jenish Syangden scored a hat-trick for Daffodil as they thrashed Bidhya Sagar 4-0. Sandeep Dhungana scored another goal in the rout. Another match played between Ideal Model and Gyanodaya ended in a 1-1 draw.


Junior tennis from December 19



The ninth edition of the Jayakar Memorial Junior National Open Tennis Tournament 2010 is all set to be held from December 19 to 25 at the Satdobato Tennis Complex. The tournament with a total cash prize of Rs 200,000 will feature 12 events in the boys´ and girls´ categories. The tournament, organized jointly by the Mana Jayakar Tennis Academy (MJTA) and All Nepal Lawn Tennis Association, has the distinction of being one with the highest cash prize for junior tournaments in Nepal, according to the organizers. MJTA´s President Jyoti Rana terms the cash prize as ´tennis scholarship´. Earlier the organizers used to send the winners abroad to participate in tournaments. Around 250 players have registered for the tournament to compete in open doubles and the U-9, U-10, U-12, U-14, U-16 age group categories for both boys´ and girls respectively.



Boxer Maharjan felicitated



Nepal Swimming Association on Thursday felicitated 16th Asian Games medalist Deepak Maharjan and boxing Coach Prachanda Sharma at the National Sports Council (NSC). Boxer Maharjan, who was the only player to bag Nepal´s one and only bronze medal in Guangzhou, also received a cash prize of Rs 20,000. NSC Member Secretary Hari Babu Chaudhary handed over the letter of appreciation and cash prize to Maharjan and his coach.
