SPORTS BRIEFS: Maharjan guides Boys Sports to win

KATHMANDU, Sept 11: A brace from Yaman Maharjan guided Boys Sports Club to 2-1 win over Jhamsikhel Youth Club on Tuesday in the Red Bull C Division Football League being held in the capital. Maharjan put the team ahead in the 35th minute and added another goal in the 59th minute, three minutes after Sunil Shahi had scored an equalizer for Jhamsikhel.



In another match, Khumaltar Youth Club edged past Kalanki Navajyoti Youth Club 3-1. Suraj Raut netted twice for Khumaltar in the seventh and 64th minute while Rup Bahadur Lama ensured victory in the last minute of match. [break]Susan Rai scored for Kalanki in the 36th minute. In the last match, Sri Bhagwati Club saw off Khalibari Football Club 2-0. Saroj Sipahi and Sagar Shrestha achieved target for Sri Bhagwati.



Ncell Cup postponed



KATHMANDU
: Citing technical reasons All Nepal Football Association (ANFA) has postponed the Ncell Cup Football Championship, which was scheduled to start at the Dasharath Stadium on Wednesday. However, a curtain raiser match between Three Star Club and Iceberg Madhyapur Youth Association has been postponed for Thursday as agitating student unions have called strike for Wednesday. All other matches have also been postponed by a day, according to a press release issued by ANFA.



ANTTA hands over cash to medalists



KATHMANDU
: All Nepal Table Tennis Association (ANTTA) handed over cash incentives on Tuesday to the medalists of the South Asian Junior Table Tennis Tournament held in Shillong, India in June, 2012. Nepali boys´ team of Bilosh Shrestha, Mani Lama and Anish Shrestha had claimed silver medal in the tournament while Lama and Anish Shrestha had combined to claim silver medal in boys´ doubles. Likewise, Nepali girls´ team of Kajol Rauniyar, Manita Chitrakar and Sunita Lama claimed bronze medals while Rauniyar and Lama secured bronze in girls´ doubles.



Sonu Thapa Magar and Swikriti Shrestha had also won bronze medal in cadet girls´ team event. National Sports Council Member Secretary Yuvaraj Lama handed over Rs 5,000 each to silver medalists and Rs 3,000 each to bronze medalists. Parents of the athletes have criticized ANTTA for bringing back the medalists from the tournament before the completion of medal ceremony. However, ANTTA has been claiming that it was forced to snub medal ceremony because of already fixed itinerary and delayed medal ceremony.



NCA gets Mountain Sports Federation



KATHMANDU
: Nepal Mountain Sports Federation issued membership to Nepal Cycling Association (NCA). Federation President Yuvaraj Lama handed over membership letter to NCA on Tuesday. NCA is the 10th association to take the membership of the federation. Meanwhile, Lama nominated NCA President Chhimi Urken Gurung as vice president of the federation and NCA General Secretary Sanjib Pandey as executive committee member.



Akhil Cup Basketball



KATHMANDU
: All Nepal Free Student Union (ANFSU) is all set to organize the Inter College Akhil Cup National Basketball Tournament from Wednesday. Organizing a press conference on Tuesday, ANFSU said that altogether 80 college teams, including 10 from out side Kathmandu valley, are to participate in the tournament jointly organized by its wings -- TU Central Committee and Akhil Force. The winner of the tournament will receive Rs 50,000 while runner-up will get Rs 30,000. The third place team will also bag Rs 20,000.



Nepal Basketball Association (NeBA) is to provide technical support to the tournament. According NeBA President Lama Tendi Sherpa, at earlier stage of the tournament matches will be conducted as knockouts and after trimming down the number the tournament would be played under league-cum-knockout format. Only boys´ teams will be featured in the tournament and national players will not be allowed to participate on it.



Namgyal, Rosebud in semis



KATHMANDU
: Namgyal and Rosebud entered into the semifinals of boys´ section in the First Inter School and College (+2) Basketball Tournament. Namgyal defeated Pyramid 55-46 while Rosebud edged past VS Niketan 39-30 on Tuesday to reach semifinals. Likewise, Premier pulled a 36-30 victory over Liverpool and Bridgewater beat Bajra 37-33 to complete semifinal equation. Premier will take on Namgyal in the next round while Bridgewater will lock horns with Rosebud.
