SPORTS BRIEFS: Kayastha takes sole lead

KATHMANDU, July 24: Madan Krishna Kayastha of GoldenGate College took sole lead in the Kathford First National University Chess Championship after the completion of the seventh round. Kayastha accumulated 6.5 points as he defeated Shyam Babu Shah of Mahendra Ratna in the sixth round and edged past Purushottam Chaulagain of Shankar Dev in the seventh round.



Chaulagain, who defeated Roshan Kumar Jaiswal of GoldenGate in the sixth round, collected six points from seven rounds and shared second position with Jaiswal, Prakash Nepal, Sushil Chaudhary, Nekesh Duwal and Saurav Pradhan. The championship will conclude on Wednesday.[break]



NASA, Classic reach pre-quarters

KATHMANDU: NASA International College and Classic College entered into the pre-quarterfinals of the First Bir Ganeshman Memorial Inter College (+2) Basketball Tournament. NASA thrashed Premier 45-20 on Tuesday to top the group E of the tournament while Classic edged past Pyramid International College 38-26 to top group F. Likewise, Xavier beat Saipal 35-14 and entered pre-quarterfinals as the runner-up of group B. In a group D match, Morgan humiliated Texas 40-14.



ANFA referee course begins in Udaypur

KATHMANDU: ANFA Referee Coaching Course for eastern region began in Udaypur on Tuesday. The course participated by 39 referees from 11 districts of the eastern region will be conducted by referee coach Buddhi Bahadur Gurung and Kiran Rai. The six-day long referee course is being conducted as per the All Nepal Football Association´s plan to produce qualified referees from all the five development regions.



NKF nominates VPs

KATHMANDU: Newly elected executive committee of Nepal Karate-do Federation (NKF) under the presidency of Dawa Gurung appointed Chandra Bahadur Thapa as senior vice president of the committee on Tuesday. The general assembly had elected 15-member executive committee on Monday under the leadership of Gurung.



Likewise, Nawaraj Dhakal, Durja Kumar Rai, Gita Rana, Bikas Jung Bahadur Rana and Bhusan Rana are nominated as vice-president. Meanwhile, Hari Sharan KC is general secretary in the new committee as Dhojman Moktan, Narayan Bahadur Magar, Shyam Sherpa and Om Krishna Prasain have been elected as secretaries. NKF is recognized only by National Sports Council while Nepal Olympic Committee recognizes another NKF body led by Purendra Bikram Lakhe.
