SPORTS BRIEFS: Karate players selected for special training

KATHMANDU, Aug 30: Three karate players were selected on Tuesday for a special training for the upcoming 12th South Asian Games (SAG).



Mallika Thapa, Anu Adhikari and Bijay Lama were selected from the first day of the selection round held at the covered hall of National Sports Council. Altogether 10 players will be selected from among 134 men and 57 women for the special training. [break]



Thapa beat Chanchala Danuwar in the women´s 45kg weight category. Adhikari, silver medalist of the 11th SAG in 50kg weight category, defeated Shanti Lama. In the men´s section, Lama overcame Parshu Kunwar in the 50kg weight category. The selection of the remaining players will be held on Wednesday.


Daffodil sets up final showdown with TIA
KATHMANDU: Daffodil School set up a final showdown with TIA in the sixth Valley Public Inter-school Basketball Tournament in the boy´s section after winning their respective matches on Tuesday. With 20 points from Sange Rabsel, Daffodil defeated Golden Peak 55-46. In another semifinal, TIA beat the host Valley Public 42-38. Ashok Khadka netted 17 points for the winning team.



In the girl´s section, Mahendra Bhawan and Pennwood are all set to lock horns for the title. Shanti Shrestha´s 24 points guided Mahendra Bhawan to a 29-12 win over Prithvi School while Pennwood registered a narrow margin win over TIA with a score of 21-20. Alisha Budathoki scored 13 points for the winning team.
