SPORTS BRIEFS: Gyanodaya off to winning start

KATHMANDU, Sept 24: The girls´ basketball team of host Gyanodaya registered victory in its opening match of the 19th Eicher Gyan Carnival Inter-school Basketball, Football and Junior Volleyball Tournament on Monday. Gyanodaya thrashed Innovative 37-9 in its first match held at its home court in Khokana. Pasang Sherpa scored 16 points for the winning team.



In another match, Rehana Thapa scored 11 points as Malpi International defeated Shridiwa 29-12. In boys´ basketball, Malpi thrashed defending champion Neric 52-22 riding on 28 points from Saugat Singh Bania. Likewise, The Excelsior beat Shridiwa 45-28 in another match. [break]In the matches of boys´ football, Army School thumped The Excelsior 6-0 while Malpi also registered victory. Meanwhile, Deep Jyoti, GEMS and Springdale emerged victorious in their respective matches of boys´ volleyball.



Shuvatara, Gyan Niketan in semis



KATHMANDU
: Shuvatara and Gyan Niketan advanced into the semifinals of the Pathshala Cup Second National Mini Basketball Tournament on Monday. Shuvatara thrashed Kanjirowa 31-8 in the match held at Pathshala Nepal, New Baneshwar while Gyan Niketan hammered Brihaspati 23-6 in another match. Nepal Police School and KMC also won their respective matches to complete the semifinal line-up.



Times beats Mahendra Campus



KATHMANDU
: Times International College defeated Mahendra Multiple Campus, Dharan 48-41 during the Akhil Cup National Men´s Open Basketball Tournament on Monday. Times took a 9-6 lead in the first quarter but suffered a setback after losing the second quarter 12-17. Times made amends for the loss with a 17-8 win in the third quarter which was enough to seal the victory as the final quarter ended 10-10.



Bijeshwari clinches title



KATHMANDU
: Bijeshwari School clinched gold in the girls´ team event during the Sixth Purnaman Memorial Open Table Tennis Tournament on Monday. Bijeshwari defeated AVM 3-0 in the final held at the Lainchaur Table Tennis Training Center to lift the title. In the boys´ team event, Neologian defeated AVM 3-0 to claim the title. In the U-16 boys´ singles, Kusum Singh Dhami of AVM defeated Prabin Khand of Neologian 11-8, 2-11, 5-11, 11-9, 11-6 to take gold. In the girls´ final of the same age group, Renuka Rana Magar of Bijeshwari saw off Manju Suwal 11-4, 11-7, 11-9 in straight sets for the gold medal. Likewise, Eva Rawat (U-14 girls´ singles) of Bijeshwari and Dikshya Tamang (U-12 girls´ singles) of AVM won golds in their respective age group matches.
