SPORTS BRIEFS: Birgunj holds Chyasal

KATHMANDU, Dec 29: Birgunj Youth Academy held Chyasal Youth Club 1-1 and Pulchowk Sports Club held Madhyapur Youth Association at the identical scores on Thursday in the Martyrs Memorial Red Bull B Division League. Arun Shrestha gave a lead to Chyasal in the 60th minute but Birgunj player Nishan Nepali leveled the score in the 73rd minute.



Birgunj is in the second position of the league table with 24 points. Meanwhile, in the second match of the day on the Nepal Police Academy Ground, Maharajgunj, Yaman Rajbahak gave a lead to Madhyapur in the 50th minute but Sudhir Shrestha leveled the score four minutes later. [break]Both Madhyapur and Pulchowk have 23 points each but Madhyapur is in the fourth position with better goal difference while Pulchowk is in the fifth.



Yeti Himalayan felicitates Thapa


KATHMANDU: Yeti Himalayan Sherpa Club, the ´A´ division football club, felicitated national team captain Sagar Thapa on Thursday for scoring a superb goal against Bangladesh in the last minute of the group stage match in the recently concluded SAFF Championship. Yeti Himalayan awarded a cash prize of Rs 50,000 to Thapa, who is also the captain of the club.



Thapa had converted a free kick almost from the center of the ground into a winning goal and that was just a few second ahead of the final whistle. Meanwhile, Yeti Himalayan bade farewell to its team participating in the National League to begin in Pokhara from Friday. The club also distributed lifetime membership to 20 people on the same occasion.


NSC to buy insurance policy


KATHMANDU: National Sports Council decided to buy accident insurance policies for athletes participating in the Sixth National Games. According to the NSC, the insurance policies are for the period between January 15 to March 6, 2012. Meanwhile, NSC decided to include a demonstration contest for the players under the newly formed Taekwondo Union in the Games.



National, Bagmati in semis


KATHMANDU: National, Bagmati, Morgan and Golden Gate reached the semifinals of the Third BST Cup Inter College Boys´ Basketball Tournament. National defeated NASA 67-51 as Bikash Gurung scored 24 points for the winner. Bagmati edged past Nobel 50-45. Tejendra Gurung contributed 29 points for Bagmati. Riding on the 20 points scored by Saurav Shrestha, Morgan thrashed Navjeevan 78-45 while Golden Gate beat Lincoln 72-49. Deepesh Neupane scored 19 points for the Golden Gate.


Neric beats Reliance


KATHMANDU: Neric defeated Reliance International Academy 22-18 on Thursday in a match of junior boys´ section of the Second Ideal Inter School Basketball Tournament. Indra Khadka scored nine points for the winners. Meanwhile, Cambridge Public School pulled a 12-11 win over Saipal Academy in senior boys´ category. Sujan Shah contributed five points for the winning side.



Tip Top XI reaches QF


KATHMANDU: Tip Top XI entered the quarterfinals of the Ridhi Sidhi Marwadi T20 Cricket Tournament after defeating Naxal Challengers by seven wickets on Thursday. Naxal won the toss and elected to bat first at the Modern Indian School, Chovar. Rahul Goyal took four wickets to bundle out Naxal for 87 runs in 16.2 overs.



Prashanna Shakya scored 21 runs for Naxal. In reply, Tip Top XI met the target in 14.2 overs losing three wickets. Manish Chaudhary scored 29 runs for Tip Top to seal consecutive victories in the tournament.


Twin wins for Police


KATHMANDU: Nepal Police Club registered twin wins on Thursday in the opening day of Seventh Blue Sky Cup Women´s Double League Volleyball Tournament. In the match played the New Buspark volleyball court, Nepal Police thumped Jawalakhel Volleyball Training Center 25-16, 25-19, 25-9. In another match Nepal Police toiled hard to beat departmental rival Armed Police Force 16-25, 25-21, 25-18, 25-22. Likewise, Angel´s Heart beat Bijeshwari 25-9, 25-12, 25-14 and New Diamond also defeated Bijeshwari 25-14, 25-11, 25-7.



Campion College victorious


KATHMANDU: Campion College emerged victorious on Thursday in the second Inter College Trinity A Level 3X3 Basketball Tournament. Campion beat National Campus 19-18 in extra time after the regular time ended in 15-15 draw. Adil Maharjan scored 11 points for the winning team.
