SPORTS BRIEFS: APF, Police maintain winning streak

KATHMANDU, Dec 1: Departmental teams -- Armed Police Force (APF) and Nepal Police Club -- maintained with their winning run to three matches each on Saturday in the Eighth Dhorpatan Women´s Double League Volleyball Tournament being held in the capital.



APF toiled hard to beat New Diamond Sports Club in five sets. After winning the first set 25-21, APF won third and fifth 31-29 and 15-9 for the victory. New Diamond won second and fourth sets 27-25, 28-26. [break]



Meanwhile, defending champion Police defeated Fishtail Higher Secondary School in straight sets 25-18, 25-17, 25-22. Fishtail thrashed Chandeshwari Youth Club, Ramechhap, 25-6, 25-10, 25-23. However, Chandeshwari defeated Dhading District Volleyball Association 25-11, 25-7, 25-6 which also lost its other match 19-25, 9-25, 13-25 against Kavre District Volleyball Association.



Pinnacle clinches college football title



KATHMANDU
: Pinnacle clinched the title of First Ace Inter-college Boy´s Football Tournament on Saturday defeating Columbus College 1-0 in the extra time during the final held at the Chyasal ground, Lalitpur. Nabin Gurung scored the match winner in the ninth minute of added 20 minute time after the regulation 60 minute match ended in 0-0 draw. Gurung was declared the best forward. Bikrant Narsingh Rana of host Ace (defender), Rabin Paudel of Columbus (goalkeeper) and Nisant Dhungana of Pinnacle (midfielder) were declared the best players in their category. The winner and the runner up teams bagged Rs 15,000 and Rs 8,000 respectively along with trophies, medals and certificates.



Jawalakhle St Xavier´s in QF



KATHMANDU
: St Xavier´s School of Jawalakhel stormed into the quarterfinals of the 17th Fr Moran Memorial Invitational Inter-school Football Tournament on Saturday. St Xavier´s thumped Eden Garden 6-0 with two goals each from Pradip Lama and Saurab Dhakal. Srishak Shrestha and Sriyash Shrestha scored one apiece. In other matches of the league rounds, Dongden Devi School of Tipling, Dhanding played 1-1 draw with Dolphin while Moran Memorial of Jhapa held Pushpanaji with an identical score. Both Dolphin and Pushpanjali also made it to the quarterfinal despite draw. The tournament is organized by St Xavier´s School, Godavari.



Jaykar tennis from December 15



KATHMANDU
: The 11th edition of Jaykar Memorial Junior National Open Tennis Tournament will be held from December 15. The tournament to be organized by Man-Jaykar Tennis Academy with the support of Nepal Lawn-tennis Association will feature boy´s and girl´s event in U-9, U-10, U-12, U-14 and U-16 age categories as well as junior boy´s and girl´s open doubles category. The event with a total cash prize of Rs 250,000 will be held at the Satdobato Tennis Court. The organizers expect participation of 250 players in the eight-day long event.



Host Western United lifts title



KATHMANDU
: Host Western United Club lifted the title of Western United Open Football Tournament on Saturday with 1-0 win over Inter District. Biki Maharjan scored the lone goal in the match held at Matatirtha ground. Samaj Sudhar finished third. The top three teams bagged Rs 20,000, Rs 10,000 and Rs 5,000 respectively. Thankot Village Sports Development Committee won the fair play award.



Friendly cricket to mark AIDS Day



KATHMANDU
: Cricket Association of Nepal on Saturday marked the World AIDS Day playing a friendly match at the TU cricket ground in Kirtipur. CAN officials, artists, singers, national players, social workers and journalists participated in the match. The participants were divided into two teams -- CAN XI and Celebrity XI -- in the event organized by Lalitpur District Cricket Association. CAN won the match by 45 runs. CAN scored 98 runs for the loss of four wickets in the 10 over match. Kiran Rana scored 23 runs and Ashok Nath Pyakurel scored 19 runs. Celebrity team managed 48 runs losing eight wickets. Mukesh Dhakal (13) was the only batsman to scored double digit for Celebrity.



Galaxy, Brihaspati triumph



KATHMANDU
: Galaxy Public and Brihaspati won their respective matches on Saturday in the Sixth Chief of the Army Staff Inter-school Running Cricket Tournament being held at Sainik Awasiya Mahavidyalaya ground in Bhaktapur. Galaxy thumped EPS by nine wickets and Brihaspati defeated Greenland Children by 27 runs. EPS elected to bat first and was bowled out for 70 runs in 16.5 overs. In Galaxy´s run chase Nabin Budathoki was unbeaten on 20 runs and Aman Jain contributed 18 runs as it achieved the target in 7.5 over losing one wicket. Aakash Bista of Galaxy was declared the man-of-the-match. In other match, Brihaspati scored 158/5 in the 20 over match and restricted Greenland for 131/9. Prajwal Gurung of Brihaspati was declared the man-of-the-match for his five wicket haul.
