Chudamani Sharma, Chief District Officer (CDO) of Kathmandu said the short term plans of the operations had produced effective results in minimizing crime rates. He said the operation will continue till the end of festival season and could be extended and modified according to requirements.

“We are satisfied with the preliminary result of the special operation in Kathmandu District, but mid-term and long-term plans could not be carried out effectively with existing resources,” he told Republica.

According to Kathmandu Metropolitan Range in the crime rates have declined to 302 cases from 359 since the operation began a month ago. According to police records, cases related to theft, gambling, weapons and sexual harassment had however, increased whereas cases of murder and black market had decreased.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Jaya Bahadur Chand, Chief of Metropolitan Police Range Kathmandu said that the operation has been largely able to control crimes. “With the result of police operation people are encouraged and are participating to take preventive measures against crimes and criminals”, SSP Chand said.

Police have been able to maintain peace and security in current political transition but we are again suffering from lack of resources and manpower, SSP Chand said.

“The operation has been able to inform people about the security challenges and preventive measures”, he said, “After the operation campaign, about 87 security committees in different areas of Kathmandu Districts have been formed.”

According to the operation, police had earlier decided to work with the locals to curb crimes. The committees not only informed the police about the crime but helped them arrest culprits and people from crime prone zones were more excited about the plan, according to SSP Chand.

Police officials said that CRV van patrolling as well as long and short range patrol have been more effective in mid-night to wee hours. “Increase in manpower and resources could help proactive policing," police officials expects. Sniffer dogs at different entry points, Drink and Drive Operation especially on Friday and Saturday, investigation and arrests of absconded criminals, inspection of people released from jail will be some other duty of the operation according to the police.

About 2,800 police personnel are deployed everyday for the operation according to the officials.
