KATHMANDU, Feb 7: The secretariat under the Special Committee has urged retiring PLA combatants to inform it if their checks and identity cards are seized by commanders.

The secretariat on Monday issued public notices through different television channels and radio stations, urging the retiring combatants to contact it if they have any concerns, after it received complaints from some retiring combatants that commanders have seized their checks and have not provided identity cards to some others.[break]

"We will address their concerns if they inform us," said Balananda Sharma, convener of the secretariat. He said the secretariat issued the public notices in consultation with the Special Committee.

According to Sharma, the secretariat will issue new checks to retiring combatants if their checks have been seized.

Officials involved in giving voluntary retirement said some combatants have complained that their identity cards have been seized by their commanders and they have been deprived of their retirement package.

The combatants are required to produce their identity cards issued by the secretariat during the categorization process last November to claim their retirement package.

They further said that they have received unsubstantiated information that the commanders have seized the identity cards of only those combatants who stayed out of the cantonments and later returned to participate in the categorization and voluntary retirement process.

The officials said they have heard that the commanders have demanded a certain percent of their retirement package to the party from those combatants.

Meanwhile, Sharma said the secretariat teams have given voluntary retirement to about fifty percent of the combatants opting for voluntary retirement as of Tuesday. Altogether 7,365 combatants have chosen voluntary retirement.
