KATHMANDU, May 27: Heat wave has already claimed more than 500 lives in India since May 22. With temperature reaching to almost 48 degree Celsius, the Telangana and Andra Pradesh region of India are reeling under severe heat condition.

Although less severe than the situation in India, Nepal is also experiencing gradual rise in heat over a week now. Drastic rise in temperature has been forecasted in Kathmandu and the western Tarai belt.According to the Meteorological Forecasting Division (MFD) of Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM), rise in temperature has been felt mostly near Dhangadi, Dipayal, Nepalgunj, Bhairawa and the Kathmandu valley.

"It is not unusual. May is the hottest month of the year and the heat will gradually subside when the monsoon cloud finally enters Nepal in a couple of weeks from now," said meteorologist Barun Paudel.

He informed that heat waves from India affect the weather condition of Nepal. "Besides the local heat mechanism, the heat waves coming from the Rajasthan area of India has contributed a lot to the rising temperature of Nepal," said Paudel.

As per MFD report, temperatures in Dhangadi and Nepalgunj already hover around 42-44 degree Celsius. May 23 has been recorded as the hottest day of the month as the temperature reading had reached to 33 Degree Celsius.

"The rise in temperature as pre-monsoon season nears its end is a normal activity. I believe the heat will remain for at least another two weeks," said Paudel.

An extreme heat of 37 degree Celsius was recorded in Kathmandu in 1980. According to Paudel, it is considered the highest temperature measured ever during the monsoon season in Nepal.

Meanwhile, strong winds, which experts call 'gusty wind,' will hit many parts of the country in the upcoming days. One person in Kathmandu and four others in the Eastern part of Nepal were killed when strong winds struck suddenly recently.

"Two such gusty winds have been recorded at Pokhara and Kathmandu and similar gust of winds will be seen in the coming days. Until and unless the monsoon rain finally arrives, such weather conditions accompanied by thunderstorms in the evening hours will remain," explained Paudel.
