KATHMANDU, Jan 31: The Supreme Court (SC) on Tuesday stayed the government´s decision to legalize the land deals arbitrated by the Maoists during the insurgency, until next order.

Acting on a writ petition filed by Democratic Lawyers´ Association, an SC full bench comprising justices Damodar Prasad Sharma, Kalyan Shrestha and Tahir Ali Anasari decided to give continuity to a January 25 stay order issued by Chief Justice Khil Raj Regmi.[break]

With this fresh stay order, the decision will not be implemented until the court gives a final decision on the writ petition.

The apex court has stayed the Maoist government´s decision amidst growing political difference between the ruling parties and the opposition parties over the decision.

The opposition parties have continued to obstruct parliamentary proceedings demanding withdrawal of the decision. The opposition parties have termed the decision as a move to legalize the decision of the insurgency-era Maoist "people´s government" that the parties have refused to recognize.
