KATHMANDU, Nov 26: Rastriya Prajatantra Party-Nepal (RPP-N) has announced to organize a 10-day Rath Yatra [chariot procession] starting December 17 with the objective to rally support for the party´s agenda of reinstating Nepal as a Hindu state.

The RPP-N is the only political party that stood against the decision to declare Nepal as a secular state and to abolish monarchy from a Constituent Assembly meeting in 2008 and ever since the party has been lobbying that such crucial issues should be decided only through referendum.[break]

The party´s chairman Kamal Thapa said the Rath Yatra will start from Janakpur, travel to Devghat, Lumbini, Pokhara and finally conclude at Pashupatinath Temple in Kathmandu. During the course, the route covers 16 districts.

"There will be at least 2,000 regular participants while altogether 1.5 million to 2 million people will participate at different places and time during the procession," said Thapa.

He explained that while the main objective of the event is to reinstate Nepal as a Hindu state, the other purpose is to promote harmony among various religions.

According to him, the procession will converge in a mass gathering at Khulamanch, Kathmandu and the gathering will pass various resolutions to end discriminatory practices existing in Hindu society.
