KATHMANDU, Jan 8: The Nepal Police and the Armed Police Force (APF) have begun preparations to recruit ‘temporary police’ to ensure security for the House of Representatives election scheduled for March 5.

Following budget approval from the Ministry of Finance, both security agencies have moved forward with the recruitment process. The government has already endorsed the Temporary Police Recruitment, Selection, Appointment and Mobilization Guidelines–2082.

A total of 149,090 temporary police personnel will be recruited, including 133,980 under the Nepal Police and 15,110 under the Armed Police Force.

The temporary police will be deployed for 40 days, including 10 days of training. They will receive salary and benefits equivalent to the basic pay scale of police and APF constables, along with uniforms and other facilities.

Uniform allowances will vary by geographical region—mountain, hill and Terai/Madhesh. Temporary police under the Nepal Police will be provided blue uniforms and caps, while those under the APF will receive uniforms similar to those worn by APF personnel.

Recruitment will be conducted by the Temporary Police Selection and Appointment Committee under the coordination of the Chief District Officer (CDO) in each district. Interested applicants can submit applications at the District Police Office or, in the case of APF, at the respective district battalion or company headquarters. The application process will also be opened under the coordination of the CDO.

Both security agencies are preparing to open applications for candidates aged between 18 and 54 years. Recruited temporary police will follow training curricula similar to that of regular police personnel.

The Ministry of Home Affairs has already sent official correspondence to both security organizations instructing them to proceed with the recruitment process.

A high-ranking police official informed Republica that efforts are underway to open applications within this week.

With only 57 days remaining for the election, the police forces are expediting security preparations.

From a security standpoint, polling stations nationwide have been categorized into three levels: highly sensitive, sensitive and normal.

Police officials said most polling stations in Madhesh and Koshi provinces have been categorized as highly sensitive, although polling stations in other provinces have also been placed on the highly sensitive list.

According to police data, 3,680 polling stations have been classified as highly sensitive, while 4,442 have been categorized as sensitive and 2,845 as normal. In total, 10,967 polling stations have been designated across the country.

Security personnel will be deployed at polling stations based on this classification. Police will be responsible for inner-circle security at polling booths, followed by the Armed Police Force and temporary police in the second layer, while the Nepali Army will provide security at the outer circle.
