KANCHANPUR, Dec 19: A public holiday has been declared across Sudurpashchim Province today on the occasion of Bhuwā, a traditional and historic cultural festival. According to a decision by the Sudurpashchim Province Council of Ministers, all government offices and public institutions in the province will remain closed.
The festival holds special significance in Bajura, Bajhang, and Achham districts. Religious beliefs associate the festival with the victory of the Pandavas over the Kauravas in the epic war. The Bhuwā dance performed during the festival symbolizes bravery, explained former ward chairperson Dil Bahadur Budha of Shuklaphanta Municipality–11.

Budha added that with increasing migration from hill districts to the Terai, the festival’s celebrations have become prominent in Kailali and Kanchanpur. In urban areas such as Dhangadhi and Mahendranagar, Bhuwā dance and Deuda performances are organized to showcase hill cultural traditions. The festival strengthens cultural unity between the hills and the Terai.
“Bhuwā festival is not merely entertainment but also a military exercise and a repository of historical epic tales,” he said. “It begins the day before Poush Krishna Aunsi and is celebrated with joy for three to five days.” During the festival, men wear traditional attire (white dress and turban) and wield swords and shields to display martial skills collectively.
“Village residents gather at one place, light fires at night, and sing Mahabharata-era epic tales,” said Tek Bahadur Saud of Beldandi. “The festival conveys messages of brotherhood, unity, and valor.” The provincial government has been declaring a holiday during this festival in past years to preserve local arts, culture, and traditions.
