KATHMANDU, June 13: Security arrangement at the Birgunj bench of the Janakpur High Court has been overhauled after two judges were smeared with black soot over a controversial verdict related to the Aftab Alam case.
The incident occurred on Thursday afternoon during office hours when members of the Nepal Communist Party (Bahumat) smeared black soot on Judges Khusi Prasad Tharu and Arjun Maharjan, which was broadcast live by the dissatisfied group. The judges had acquitted the accused in the high-profile Rajpur bomb case, in which Mohammad Aftab Alam was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Rautahat District Court.

In response, the District Police Office (DPO), Parsa, withdrew all 13 personal security officers (PSOs) assigned to the judges and replaced them with a new lot. Additionally, all other 10 security personnel deployed for court security were recalled and replaced with a new team.
The number of security personnel at the court has now been increased by 50 percent, with 15 police personnel deployed under the command of a Sub Inspector, informed DSP Kishor Lamsal of DPO Parsa.
Police say the swift overhaul aims to ensure the safety of judges and other officials and to prevent similar incidents in the future.
