KATHMANDU, March 22: President Ram Chandra Paudel has stressed the need for conservation of water bodies for the recharge of groundwater resources in view of the challenges of possible water crisis in the future.

Issuing a message of best wishes on the occasion of the World Water Day on Saturday, President Paudel stressed the need for all concerned stakeholders to take initiative to construct structures including ponds and lakes in rural areas and alternatives for recharge of ground water with rainwater in urban areas.

“There is a need to formulate a water reservoir plan by mixing ancient and modern technology,” the President said in his message.

The message states that although the existence of the animal world is linked with water and nature, the origin of organisms happened in water and ancient human civilizations have developed on the banks of rivers, the conservation of nature and water to save the existence of life has now become a challenging task.

“Groundwater is an important natural resource that helps to make ecosystems sustainable and maintain river flows and replenish safe drinking water while mitigating the impacts of climate change,” the President said.

He expressed concern over the loss of water resources due to increasing urbanization and natural disasters, climate change and pollution caused by the construction of physical infrastructures.

“The groundwater level continues to decline due to overexploitation of water resources and obstruction in recharge owing to concrete structures constructed in urban areas. Groundwater resources are getting polluted due to the unsystematic human settlements and increasing industrialization,” the message reads.

President Paudel stated that natural disasters and loss of life and property could be minimized with the help of a timely early warning system while protecting water resources and river systems.

He wished that the World Water Day would inspire everyone to meet the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through conservation and utilization of water.

VP Yadav stresses water conservation

Vice-President Ram Sahay Prasad Yadav has pointed out the need of conserving water, the precious gift by nature that helps in survival.

In a message on the occasion of World Water Day 2025, he mentioned that conservation of water was necessary for the safe and prosperous life of future generations.

“We cannot imagine life without water. It is necessary to be active to provide safe and clean water for the coming generations by taking possible initiatives and meaningful efforts for the conservation and appropriate use of water,” the message read.

He shared, “Water insufficiency can disrupt ecosystems as well as put the food and water security at risk. Sources of water are declining rapidly in Nepal.”

World Water Day has been celebrated on March 22 every year since 1993 at the call of the United Nations with the aim of raising awareness about the importance, conservation and sustainable use of water.

This year, the day is being celebrated around the slogan 'Preservation of Glaciers' by organizing various awareness programmes in different parts of the country.
