Issuing a statement on the occasion of Martyrs' Day on Friday, President Bhandari said, "Time has come to join hands for economic development and prosperity through broader political consensus and unity."
She said that the historic day should inspire us to move ahead for the country, nationality, independence, freedom, self-admiration and protection of the human rights.
The Martyrs' Day was established to honor the sacrifice of Sukra Raj Shastri, Gangalal Shrestha, Dharma Bhakta Mathema and Dashrath Chand, who were assassinated by the then autocratic Rana rulers for their role in defending the sovereignty, freedom and independence of Nepalese people. Chand and Mathema were hanged from a tree in Sifal, Kathmandu while Shrestha and Shastri were shot dead.
In her letter, the president has also expressed her heartfelt tribute for all the known and unknown martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the sake of country.
