President approves army security for elections

KATHMANDU, April 28: President Bidya Devi Bhandari has approved the recommendation of the government to deploy Nepal Army (NA) personnel for the security of the upcoming local polls.

In a statement issued by Deputy Spokesperson of the Office of the President, Prahlad Prasad Pudasaini, President Bhandari approved the recommendation as per Article 66(2) of the Constitution of Nepal, 2015. Earlier, the National Security Council on March 9 had recommended deploying Nepal Army personnel for election security.


Local Level Election Security Act, 2016, allows deployment of army for conducting the local-level election in free and fair manner through presidential approval. Nepal Army personnel will man the third and the outermost security ring. Nepal Police will man the first security ring and the Armed Police Force the second.
