Preserving language, culture govt's responsibility, says PM

KATHMANDU, July 13: Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai has said that the government was committed to the promotion of the language and culture.



He also stressed that it is the responsibility of both the government and the Nepali people to promote and preserve the language and culture of the country which he dubbed as the unique and oldest in the world.[break]



The prime minister expressed this view while speaking in a program commemorating the 199th birth anniversary of the Pioneer Poet of Nepal, Bhanubhakta Acharya and organized by the Bhanu Pratisthan in the capital on Friday.



Prime Minister Bhattarai praised the pioneer poet for contributing to the development of the Nepali language as a lingua-franca.



He asked the Bhanu Pratisthan to come up with a scientific and special plan for honouring and publicizing the contributions of the pioneer poet, assuring it of all-out support from the government´s side.



The prime minister urged the Nepali speakers to work for the preservation and promotion of every language spoken in the country in the context of the country adopting federalism.



Poet of the Nation, Madhav Ghimire, urged the government to pay special attention to protecting the contributions of the pioneer poet to the Nepali language.



Chancellor of the Nepal Academy, Bairagi Kainla, said the contribution of the pioneer poet to the development of the Nepali language should be always held in high esteem.



A committee has been constituted under the chairmanship of poet Ghimire for holding a centenary function in honour of the pioneer poet.
