Due to fear of infection, almost 94 percent of the patients have been moved to other hospitals for treatment. The hospital administration said only six women gave birth to their babies on Sunday. On an average, the number of births in the hospital during normal times stands at 100. [break]
Staffers at the emergency counter said the hospital has been admitting patients only for normal delivery“ "We have been advising patients to go elsewhere for delivery as even normal cases can develop complication”," said a staffer.
The hospital administration decided to shut down all its three operation theaters after patients who received surgery on Friday developed complications. The hospital detected potential sources of infection in all the operation theaters.
As all the patients receiving surgery on Friday complained of severe headache and fever, the hospital administration had called doctors from the Bir Hospital. The doctors from Bir Hospital suggested that the patients be referred to other hospitals. The patients were then referred to intensive care in private hospitals.
According to administrator at the Maternity Hospital Amar Amatya, three patients were referred to Kantipur Hospital, two to Star Hospital, one each to Nagarik Hospital, Blue Cross hospital and Patan Hospital. Amatya said the condition of the patient who had been referred to Kantipur hospital is critical.
Amatya said that a separate committee has been formed to probe the matter. He said all the operation theaters will remain shut till Tuesday. The hospital said that all the three operation theaters have been sterilized through fumigation.
"This is the first time that we shut down all the operation theater”," he added. Director of the Hospital Dr Sheela Barma could not be reached for comments.
The hospital has claimed that it sterilizes operation theaters regularly.
