KATHMANDU, Feb 23: A joint assessment of United Nation (UN) bodies on Tuesday said that the vulnerability in food security still persists in Nepal even though there were improvements in food security following the devastating April earthquakes.

The UN's World Food Program (WFP), Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) and the Development Program (UNDP) issuing a joint statement said that food insecurity among the quake survivors mainly from Dalit community and single female-headed households was higher and they need assistance.

The assessment that was based on the survey over more than 4,000 households in 11 quake-hit districts conducted immediately after April 25 quake assessed that over one third of Dalit households fall below the acceptable threshold for food consumption. The report has also assessed that single female-headed households were more vulnerable to food insecurity.

The steady progress in food security was credited to the humanitarian assistance received, the start of the summer harvest, and the restoration of access to markets and improvements to their general functionality. The joint statement has also estimated that 78.9 percent of households reported having debts to repay.

UN bodies have expected the assessment would be helpful in identifying priorities to the development partners and government authorities of Nepal to promote a resilient Nepal.
