The panel will recommend necessary amendments to the provisions related to the prime ministerial election. The committee will prepare a report in this regard and submit it to Speaker Subas Nembang. The speaker then will set the new parliament election schedule as per the committee´s recommendations.
“I hope the drafting committee will prepare the draft within couple of days. We will be able to table the draft at the next parliament meeting,” Nembang said. Next parliamentary meeting is scheduled for Monday.
The proposal to amend the parliamentary regulations was submitted by Maoist Deputy Parliamentary Party leader Narayan Kaji Shrestha. Chief whips of Nepali Congress and CPN-UML -- Laxman Ghimire and Bhim Acharya respectively -- had seconded the proposal.
The parties have proposed that only two finalists be allowed to compete for the prime ministerial post after the first round of the voting. Maoist and UML leaders have also proposed that the voting for the new prime minister be terminated if it yields no results for three consecutive rounds and instead begin a new process.
Meanwhile, President Dr Ram Baran Yadav has said he wants to see the new government at the earliest. The head of state expressed such wish during a meeting with Speaker Nembang on Thursday evening.
