The Indian-origin Canadian citizen has been acting head of the UN rights body since her predecessor Richard Bennette left OHCHR-N in last August.
“Sanghera has been tasked by the High Commissioner to direct the work of OHCHR-N which, as per the renewed terms of its mandate in June 2010, has now closed its field offices in the regions and restructured its shape and tasks in a new configuration in Kathmandu,” OHCHR-N said in a statement on Thursday.
She is the fifth representative of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights to the UN rights body in Nepal since OHCHR-Nepal was established in 2005. She has been with Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights for nearly a decade serving as the Adviser on trafficking in Geneva for several years and subsequently as the Senior Human Rights Adviser in Sri Lanka. Upon her appointed, Sanghera expressed full and continuting support of OHCHR-N to the government, national institutions and people of Nepal in making tangible progress on the Universal Periodic Review of human rights in Nepal in Geneva scheduled for January 25-27.
“This is critical period for the future of the peace process in Nepal and for fulfilling its human rights commitments under international law, as well as for honouring the aspirations of the Nepalese people,” said Sanghera in a statement. “The UPR will be an excellent opportunity to take stock of progress and underline measures that would further support the peace process”.
