There are about 425,000 people on government payroll. One percent increment in the salary of government employees would cost the state coffers about Rs 640 million.

Talking to reporters, Communications minister Shankar Pokharel said civil servants´ salaries have been increased at 1:3.1 ratio. “The increment will cost the government an additional Rs 12.30 billion,” he said.

This is Rs 7.1 billion more than the actual amount allocated for the allowance of government employees in the newly unveiled budget. Each employee enjoys salary worth 14.2 month a year on an average.

Pokharel said the cabinet meeting also decided to increase the amount of public welfare advertisement to Rs 160 million, up from Rs 80 million. Unlike in the past, the Public Welfare Advertisement will be distributed also to the electronic media from this year.

Among others, the meeting also decided to allocate Rs 10 million for the felicitation of senior journalists and set up a separate fund for the cause of journalists injured and maimed during Maoist insurgency.
