KATHMANDU, Nov 6: The high-level probe committee formed by National Sports Council (NSC) submitted its report to NSC patron Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai on Tuesday stating that the financial, managerial and infrastructural aspects of almost all national sports associations are unsatisfactory.

Coordinator of the committee, NSC Vice-president Pitambar Timsina, handed over the report to Prime Minister Bhattarai amidst a function at the Prime Minister´s Office in Singha Durbar.

NSC had formed the committee on July 10 to probe financial as well as other activities of all the national sports associations, including the Nepal Olympic Committee (NOC).

According to coordinator Timsina, the committee had found Rs 165.2 million in arrears in the name of different national associations. "As we started investigation, most of the associations settled the arrears. Arrears of Rs 101.47 have already been settled till date," said Timsina.

The committee has suggested to NSC to regularly monitor financial, legal as well as technical issues of national associations.

PM Bhattarai said the report would help the government solve problems facing the Nepali sports sector and that the government is committed to implementing suggestions offered by the report. PM Bhattarai also ordered NSC Member Secretary Yuvaraj Lama to take action against the officials and national associations that failed to settle the arrears.

PM asks sports ministry to write to IOC

Meanwhile, PM Bhattarai asked Secretary at the Ministry of Youth and Sports Hari Prasad Nepal to write to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) about the controversy surrounding Nepal Olympic Committee (NOC). According to an NSC press statement, PM Bhattarai said the controversy surrounding NOC has brought national shame and he is committed to settle the controversy.

Earlier, Nepal National and International Players Association (NNIPA) President Deepak Bista had requested PM Bhattarai to take steps to settle the NOC controversy. Bista informed PM Bhattarai that the players have been suffering due to the existence of parallel NOC bodies.

Two different NOCs -- one led by Dhruba Bahadur Pradhan and other by Rukma S Rana -- have been claiming legitimacy for the last few years while the Supreme Court has recognized the one led by Rana.

On the other hand, IOC has recognized the NOC led by Pradhan. IOC has been claiming that no other entity other than IOC is entitled to recognize a national Olympic committee.
