The case dates back to February 16, when a first-year postgraduate psychiatry resident at Kathmandu University (KU) School of Medical Sciences attempted suicide. A complaint was subsequently lodged with the NMC, alleging harassment by a senior member of the department as a contributing factor.

After preliminary investigations, the NMC suspended the head of the Psychiatry Department, Dr Ajay Risal, along with doctors Dr Deepak Kunwar, Dr Barsha Shrestha, and Dr Rika Rizal, for one week.
